Kvåle - You Farm

Experience Flatdal village, the only remaining authetic village in Norway.
Stay at Kvåle, an exellent startingpoint for a wide range of activities.

How to get there :

Kvåle is situated by the foot of Skorve mountain, Seljords highest mountain
and a popular motive for artists living in and visiting the valley. Kvåle
is about 300 meters from the Flatdal village. Exit E134 by the sign to
Flatdal church. At "tunvollen" (the crossroads in the village) just go
straight ahead in stead of going left towards the church.

After 300 meters the gate at Kvåle welcomes you to the farm.

About the farm:

The farm is run as a traditional farm with sheep and cattle, and from 2002 we startet with agrotourism. The farm have
about 100 da cultivated land and about the same amount of traditional
grazing land. Additonal large, continuous areas of traditional grazing land
with old stone fences and open plains are being restored.

The cattle are crossbreed with both Herdford, Aberdeen Angus, Charolaise,
Limousine og Norsk Rødt fe. The sheep are of old traditional Norwegian
breed dala. The farm is run in a traditional way, but at the same time
modernised in order to adjust to present requirements.

Sheep with lambs and cows with calves graze in the country courtyard both
at Kvåle and Dalen, and in the forrest during summertime. The bulls, both
younger and older, have their own sperate field. All the animals are free
to walk in and out of the barn, and even at winter they can choose to be
out in the free or inside on a bed of straw.

The oldest part of the house was buildt in 1718, and this part still has
traditional Telemark furnishing. The storehouse on pillars was buildt in
1756, and shows solid traditional handcraft combined with a strong feeling
for esthetics. At the loft of the storehouse there are two poster
beds avaliable. At the farm there is also a log sauna, Badstogo, buildt in
1947. The sauna has two rooms and can be combined with acommondation for
one or two persons. In 1993 "Veslestogo" was buildt. "Veslestogo" is a
log house in traditional style. The house has all modern facilities and a
nice view of the farm, the fields and the village.

Dalen is situated ca 200 meters above Kvåle. The main building
(Halvorsbøle) is buildt in
1963. The house has a hall, kitchen, bath-room and one livingroom at the main floor
and a hall and three bedrooms in the first floor. There is also a small
storehouse with possibility for acommodation for two persons. There is also
an old smie, carpenter-room and the remainings of a mill and a saw-mill.

Destinations and activities :

We can recommend several attractions in Seljord and Telemark. Telemark is
regarded as the prime cultural county in Norway, and Vest-Telemark has a
beautiful and versified nature. About 250 of the total of 350 Norwegian
houses from the medevial age are situated in Vest-Telemark. Houses from
the 12th century are still being used in everyday life, and beautiful
stavechurches that represent an unique Norwegian arcithectural style can
also be found in this area.

The Flatdal village with its consistent building tradition and Mykkelstogo
cultural senter is only a 5 minute walk away and is strongly recommendable.
Other destinatons are Nutheim Gjestgiveri, the seamonstercentre, the
sculptural monument Tuft at Nes, and a wide range of arts and craft
exhibitions in the district. Summer 1999 Yoko Onos art was exposed at the
Summer Exhibition in Seljord, and every summer there is a lot of art Exhibitions inn the district of Vest-Telemark. At Kvale, in the restored barn from 1853/1907, we also have a new Exhibition every summer.

In Bø, 40 km away from Kvåle, you have Telemark Sumarland which is at big place of entertainment for children and adults. The center of Seljord, Brøløs, is also a
active shoppingcenter worth a visit.

Flatdal is in the middel of Telemark, and is a good startingpoint for
visits to the Telemark canal, Heddal stave church, Dalen Hotell, Tuddal Høgfjellshotell,
Gaustatoppen, the Industrial Workers Museeum at Rjukan or Telemark
Sommarland.

We would also like to emphasize that at Kvåle and Flatdal you are never far
from highlands or mountains where the scenery is incredably beautiful and
the complete silence can be experienced. Maybe the best way to spend your
holiday, and we wich you welcome.
